Here’s my responses for the WIPIT Good Blogfest, an opportunity hosted by DL Hammons and Elise Fallson, to share a tiny bit about my latest work in progress.
I have two WIPs this month, one is a minor project while I’m working in the background of the main one. I’ll attempt to share some of each.
WIP 1
WIP Title: Blue Popcorn (Book 2 in a psychological thriller series)
Word Count (projected/actual so far): 85,000 words first draft status, yet to be revised/rewritten.
Genre: Psychological Thriller / Crime / Detective
How long have you been working on it?: Since November last year, but with several breaks. Currently revising and reworking. These last few weeks I’ve been working on some advanced GMC for the main characters.Elevator Pitch (if you came across an agent in an elevator ride, what couple of lines would you use to summarize your book): When a scream pierces the cinema, forensic psychology student Blue Raynes is forced to work with the man she was about to dump – to find a killer working their way through the Asian Indian community and later, her own address book. All in the name of honour.
Brief Synopsis (250 words or less):
As Blue Raynes considers how she can ditch her boyfriend Raj, a scream pierces the movie cinema she is sitting in. When it’s discovered that it’s a close work colleague who has been murdered, forensic psychology student Blue finds herself a prime suspect.
When a second murder victim is found, Blue and trainee detective Raj Brundi find themselves forced together to babysit each other, hindered from proving their honour and building their careers or from finding the killer.
Raj and Blue encounter constant resistance from both the Detective Squad, and an Indian community and culture that won’t welcome them. Even Blue’s long-time mentor, Professor Barton Philips, seems set against her.
Then, the killer turns their attention back onto Blue, and all those she loves.
Alone and threatened, Blue hurtles across Liverpool, fighting Raj, fighting the police, and fighting the charges against her.
When love and honour clash it becomes deadly.

Are you looking for a Critique Partner?: No.

Sounds intriguing.
Hi Hunter. You’ve got two very cool projects. Blue Raynes (love the name) sounds like a great character fighting against all odds. I love those kinds of stories. All the best getting these two projects finished and thanks for sharing with us today! (:
Excellent stuff! I love a good crime thriller.
Great concepts. Now the question is, when will you be finished? *fists on hips*

I admire you for being able to work on multiple things at once! Good luck with both your projects!
Blue Raynes sounds like a wonderful character, and the premise is intriguing. Good luck with both projects. 🙂
I love crime thrillers and I love your main character’s name.
This story looks so good. I am totally drawn in and I love movies with conflict created by cultural and generational clashes in the same culture.
I love the name!!! Very good pitch!
Thank you Courtney, and all the other travelers who came and saw via the WhipIt Good blogfest. Your comments have been just what I needed to motivate me back into the revision work.
What a bummer, to be stuck with the guy you want to dump! But I do wonder if they will find their way “back” to each other in the end 🙂 Sounds like it could be a humorous but also thrilling story.
Trisha, in an extreme interpretation of finding their way back, you may be right.
Two thrilling stories, they sound great!
Love that line about the killer working his way through her address book, even if it’s scary!
